Hilarious, isn’t it – smashing a freshly-baked cake in your bride’s face and ruining her make-up?

No matter that they both probably cost hundreds, if not thousands, of pounds. Oh and your bride specifically asked you not to prank her on the wedding day.

This is what happened to one unlucky bride Maya* who was less than impressed when her husband of a few hours plunged her face into their cake.

It’s left the cake, and their relationship, completely broken.

Maya, posting on Reddit, explained that she told her partner of four years, Jake, many times she did not want any pranks on the big day.

Jake had agreed, but kept on watching wedding prank videos online and started acting suspicious, insisting on booking the photographer and cake himself.

The bride said: ‘I reminded him the day before that if he did something (smashing cake) like that, I would break up with him immediately.’

Everything was going smoothly on the big day, until it became time to do the cake cutting.

‘The whole room watched as I made the first cut and the photographer stood in front of us with camera in hand, Maya said.

‘Suddenly I felt a hand on the back of my head pushing me face first into the cake. Not only my make-up but the whole wedding dress was ruined and the whole room laughed, my husband the loudest.’

Jake got the photographer to take pictures and told the bride this was now their wedding picture.

Understandably hurt by his behaviour, Maya ran to the bathroom before deciding to leave the venue altogether.

‘Jake apologised and then his brother Frank led us back into the hall which was suddenly very quiet and most of our families looked down at the floor a little embarrassed,’ she added.

‘The festivities were cut short and I was taken home by Frank because I was too angry with my husband and I didn’t want to see him.’

The bride was hurt to find that Jake’s behaviour tracks from the past too, as his brother Frank explained how he would throw cake on his face during birthdays and break his presents.

So, just 48 hours after the wedding Maya decided she wanted a divorce, saying she couldn’t trust her husband as he lied to her and didn’t respect her wishes.

In the UK, she would have to wait a year before she could file, as you can’t legally get a divorce before the year mark of being married.

Maya swiftly left Jake, and received a lot of backlash for it.

‘I decided to separate from him and file for divorce and informed Jake’s and my family about it,’ she said. ‘Jake just told me not to do that because it was just a harmless prank.

‘I was spammed by both his family and mine that it would be ridiculous to end our marriage over this. but I see it differently.

‘If he does something like this to me despite multiple requests not to do it even after promising he wouldn’t do it then I can’t trust him, no matter what he promises me.’

The bottom line is that she feels Jake doesn’t care about her feelings regarding his actions and she can’t trust him in the future.

Maya was also looking into getting an annulment

The bride said she would now look into the annulment route and see if she can get the marriage nullified, although for this she would have to fit certain criteria, like not having consummated her marriage.

Those in the comments offered the bride sympathy and pointed out that it was cruel for Jake to ignore his wife’s pleas.

‘How hard is this for people to understand?’

Another, @wickedcherub, said: ‘It’s just so dangerous. Lots of cakes have dowel and skewers in them holding them up and you can basically impale someone through the skull doing that.

‘You know, besides the disrespect, disregard etc. Way to love someone.’

Despite the dangers and disrespect of cake smashing where one party isn’t on board, this remains a popular wedding staple.

But, cake-smashing, which has its roots in ancient tradition (barley cake would be crumbled over brides’ heads to symbolise male dominance and future fertility), isn’t always a sage choice.

In fact, it’s considered to be a terrible omen among wedding professionals.

On a Reddit thread where industry workers shared their wedding day red flags, one photographer wrote: ‘I swear that all of the couples that have split up have smashed the cake in their significant other’s face.’

A wedding photographer added: ‘I’ve seen this happen a handful of times and all of those relationships that I have kept up with have ended in a divorce,’ while a wedding planner commented: ‘I can tell you this is one of the biggest indicators at the wedding that the couple won’t last.’

So perhaps you might be wise to skip this tradition. Just to be safe.
